• सुरक्षा परिषद,संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ (UNO) का मुख्य अंग है ! एक प्रकार से यह संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की कार्यपालिका है !
• संयुक्त राष्ट्र घोषणा पत्र के अनुसार अन्तराष्ट्रीय शांति व सुरक्षा बनाऐ रखना सुरक्षा परिषद का मुख्य कार्य है इसीलिये इसे दुनिया का पुलिसमैन (The World’s Policeman) कहा जाता है !
• इसमें 15 सदस्य होते है, जिनमें 5 स्थायी और 10 अस्थाई सदस्य होते है !
• 5 स्थाई सदस्य (Permanent Members) है  – अमेरिका, रूस, फ्रांस, इंग्लैड, और चीन
• अस्थाई सदस्यों का चुनाव महासभा अपने दो तिहाई बहुमत से 2 बर्षों के लिये करती है अर्थात इसके अस्थाई सदस्य देश प्रत्येक 2 बर्ष में बदलते रहते है !
• सुरक्षा परिषद के प्रत्येक सदस्य का एक बोट होता है ! प्रक्रिया संबंधी मामलों में निर्णय के लिये 15 सदस्यों में से 9 सदस्यों का सकारात्मक मतदान आवश्यक है, जिसमें पांचो स्थाई सदस्य देशों का सकारात्मक मतदान आवश्यक है !
• पांचो स्थाई सदस्य देशों की सहमति को वीटो शक्ति के रूप में जाना जाता है ! यदि कोई स्थाई सदस्य किसी निर्णय से सहमत नही है, तो वह नकारात्मक मतदान कर अपने वीटो अधिकार का उपयोग कर सकता है ! इस स्थिति में 15 में से 14 सदस्यों की सहमति के बाबजूद प्रस्ताव स्वीक्रत नही होते !
• यदि कोई स्थाई सदस्य किसी निर्णय का समर्थन नही करता और उसे रोकना भी नही चाहता तो वह मतदान की प्रक्रिया के समय अनुपस्थित रह सकता है !
• रूस ने सबसे अधिक बार वीटो का उपयोग किया है !
